how do u open up the stock air box? or is it better to just get the modified stock air box cover from west coast corvette? i think its the same thing right?
does this mod give any extra horses
sorry for all the questions
thanks for all the help
I think it can be cut with a good utility knife.. Most guys switch to a K&N filter when they open up the box because the stock filter is only paper and not meant to be exposed to the elements.
If you buy a 2nd lid, you can then switch back to stock instantly if you need to.
How much power will you get? It's widely debated, and depends on model year. The 97's and 98's were very intake-restricted, and each year has been less-restrictive since. I think the best answer is probably "a few HP, perhaps 10-15 on a pre-99".
My first suggestion would be to get a Donaldson or some other high flow air box. Exit 28 has a small one for under $70 I think. If you would like to cut the stock air box instead it can be done very easily
you will need a saber saw to cut the air box lid. you can get a pretty good idea of how to cut the cover by looking in a mid-america catalog. if you do cut it i have a sketch for a water shield for the cut air box cover to keep the water off of the filter when you open the hood or wash the car. it does not effect the air going into the air filter. i can scan it to you if you wish. i have done the cut air box lid and the K&N filter on my 97,99 and now my 02 and i think it helps as much as the high dollar deals because i used a thermo couple to check the air temp at the air box at speed and it was only 3 or 4 degrees warmer than the outside temp shown on the A/C display. :chevy
yeah would u be able to scan me the pics for the water shield...also so du u think i should do this or should i just go with the donalson intake...cant make up my mind
thanks for all the help
I remember seeing a chart with the Donaldson filter element and a K&N element and the stock element. The K&N is a cotton filter which is better than paper but the Donaldson is a synthetic filter which is even better. The Donaldson flowed 1.4 times as much air as the K&N with the same surface area. I wish I could find the chart now. The Donaldson air box also has much more surface area than the stock air box even when cut. I took all this into consideration when I was shopping for an air box. I would say the Donaldson is well worth it. Post a WTB ad in the for sale section and you might find a used one for cheap

You are forgetting about the ram air effect you get with bottom breathers. There is a high pressure area in the cavity that the bottom breathers go in. I do believe they offer slightly better performance but the number difference is too small for me to cut the radiator shroud and call me stupid but I wouldn't risk hydrolock either.
