Installed a JVC HU and speakers to my 99 vert. Now I have very little reception. I found thru the search that there is a antenna booster that needs wired up with 12v and 5v?
Is there a DIY thread showing how to do this?
Another thought, can I just run another antenna wire from the new HU to the antenna bypassing the booster?
The problem with antenna boosters is that it also amplifies the noise that the antenna picks up. Are you sure you plugged the antenna into the head unit? Did your head unit come with an antenna adapter? You may need that too. If you did all of that then yes, you could run a new antenna. You will have to cut a hole in your finder and run the new antenna wire to your head unit. You might consider taking your car to a car stereo shop first and let them check it out, and if needed, let them install the antenna. Good luck...
You won't need to cut any holes, you already have a fender mounted power antenna in the vert. Make sure you have the antenna connector plugged in securely and that it is the same type connector as your new HU. On the convertible, you don't have an antenna amplifier. Make sure that the antenna connector inside the head unit has a single hole that the car antenna cable plugs in to. If it doesn't, you may need to pick up an adaptor to change it to what ever the HU uses. Double check your connection and post what happens.
I did check to see that the connection to the HU did not separate during installation (pulled everything apart again). The antenna plug and socket seem like they are a perfect size fit. What kind of adaptor would it need?
If the female in the HU is the same connector as the male on the antenna cable, you don't need any adaptor. You may have a defective new HU, or the cable to the antenna could be broken. I have tested before by just getting a cheap universal antenna (O'reilly's has a small flexible rubber one for about 9 bucks) or any used antenna with the same type connector, and plug it into the HU. If it now has reception, you have a problem with the antenna or cable. If still none, the problem is in the HU. Make sure that the male prong that sticks out on the antenna cable is making contact with the hole in the back of the HU where it connects. The center pin has to contact the metal inside the hole of the HU. The adaptor I was talking about earlier was if the HU has a two hole connection and the car has one large pin. Can you look at the old HU and compare the antenna hole to the new one? Also, did you have good reception with the old HU in the car?
