Strange thumping engine noise

I have a strange noise I have not been able to track down on this 98... It sounds like something thumping the inside of the intake... could it be the idler?

Yeah, I agree. Could be anything depending on the sound and the general area its coming from. Up top or down in the bottom...

A "thumping" type sound from the top end just doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard of before. Happy its not from the bottom end. Can you be more descriptive? Tapping sound? Clicking sound? At Idle only or higher rpm? HVAC on or off? Fan's on or off? Pull the codes too just in case. I'm sort of wondering about the A.I.R pump and valve.
