Default 2003 AE Select Ride

In 2005 we traded 98 vette in for 2003 AE with 7,500 miles. On way home from dealer I noticed the Vette was riding hard. No change from "tour" to "sport" on select switch. Dealer replaced shocks under warranty. The shipping stifferners had not been left in shocks. Two were leaking slightly. Everything fine until return from 2,000 mile trip to "Vettes On The Rockies" weekend this July. Riding rough again, no change from "tour" to "sport".
Car has 27,000 miles on it. Took to dealer for check. No codes, no solution except four new $1,000 shocks. Shocks not leaking. Is there anyway to reactivate, rebuild, etc. the magnetic particle shocks? What goes wrong internally? I like the select ride when working, however normally run in "tour". Reading threads, it seems majority suggest installing Z06 shocks and resistors. Since I would have a fixed ride, I would like the vette to ride like "tour" on select ride. Will Z06 shocks be too stiff or close to "tour"?

Sorry to hear you are having problems. There really isn't anything to the shocks from what I can tell. They are very simple, just very expensive because of the special fluid in them.

If you want a feel closer to touring, I wouldn't use Z06 shocks. Get the stock shocks for a non-Z06, non-Z51, non-F55 vette.

Hi, I would doubt that all 4 shocks have failed as the dealer claims. Especially as there are no leaks. Leaking out is what usually renders a shock unusable. Take it to a different dealer that understands the system better. There is probably something wrong with the electronics, such as grounds, connectors, switch, fuses, or such.
Good Luck

The dealer seems to only know what their computer tells them. You make a good point about it being an electronic problem, since this failure has now occured twice. I am not sure how many shocks may have failed, I just know when you take a moderate highway curve with bumps the car wants to skip sideways, which has not been the case since the shocks replacement at 7,500 miles. I will continue to search for additional knowledge. Thanks for your input.

Do you have the original tires? I find the run flats find every rut in the road.

Hi, I really doubt any have failed, with no leaks, and from your description of the problem making you think they have, I would say that I have the same shocks on my 50th AE vert with 15000 miles on it, and my car will skip around corners with the slightest variation of road surfaces. Yes I have the oem tires, but other tires can and do produce the same effects depending on wear, tread depth and amount of air in them. I find less air tends to keep them more stable on those kinds of surfaces, and they soak up bad surfaces better.
Good Luck

There is one PCM related failure that can cause this condition and probably will not light any warning messages. Display the codes on the DIC by starting the On Board Diagnostic System and check for code P1652. If you have this code the problem could be in the PCM or the wiring between the PCM and the ESC module.
