This is weird. Yesterday afternoon I was driving home at dusk and decided to put just the driving lights (a.k.a. parking lights) on which is the first click on the turn signal stalk. The high intensity white lights came on, but the headlights popped up too (but didn't come on). This has never happened before. When I clicked again to turn the headlights on, they came on as per normal.
What would make the headlight shells activate all of a sudden when they normally stay down on the first click?
Additional observation: I don't know if this is related, but the right headlight shell suddenly had trouble opening and closing. There's nothing impeding the motion of the headlight shell, so I don't know why it would do that other than the gears simply wearing out. The motor spins but it almost sounds like the gears are stripped.

It's likely related, and some brass replacement gears are in your future. I haven't swapped mine over just yet, but I may in the near future.
