So my car started stumbling at low throttle and running lean, and I finally figured out it was the MAF going bad. I picked up a replacement at the local Discount Auto and the problem is magically fixed.
The part that troubles me is the replacement MAF has a screen and my OEM MAF (2003 Z06) did not have the screen. Should I keep the one with the screen? Does it rob me of any power?
I'd pull the screen off, but be careful of messing up any of the resistors. I punched mine out with a new pencil. I put the eraser at the edge of the screen and tapped on it with a small hammer I had and it worked it's way out.
The other thing I'd be concerned about is the the cal of the new MAF. You'll know soon enough if it's close.
Ive had both, and switched back and forth more times than Id like to admit trying to see which one made the car run better. I found the car ran a hair better off the line, but not worth the additional surging I had at low speeds.
Since the replacement MAF is also a delco OEM part, would it still need calibration? Also, is MAF recalibration something that goes on during a normal tuning session?
I'd take it off on any year. It's an "airflow straightener" and a restriction.
I have an '01 Zo6 which has the screen, the '02+ doesn't....
I took mine out on my '01.... who knows if it made a difference. All the little things add up on the induction of air (cold air kit/descreen maf/coolant bypass/ported throttle body)
it's not neccisarry that's for sure, the reason they put it on was interchangability with cars the 5.3 truck motors used the same MAF and since the air intake track had an "elbow" right before the MAF it used the screen to straighten out the airflow for a more accurate reading however GM wisened up with the late modle Z06s with the addage "every bit counts" and didn't use them, so should you take it out? how much time do you have on your hands/how much is .5 hp worth to you HAHA
and that's because the screen does not restrict until your engine exceeds the 390hp mark.
Since the new MAF cured my surging issues and the part numbers on the MAF itself match up, I think I'm going to keep it. I think I'll pop off the screen since my mod game plan will eventually have me above 390whp.
