If you have an automatic, you dont have a clutch.

You might be thinking of a Torque Converter.

Sounds like he's preparing to rebuild his automatic transmission. I've seen kits online, but can not recall the websites.

No a manual has a clutch that seperates the power from the engine and the torque tube that is connected to the tranny. This is what allows you to shift gears, get it into gear, etc. An auto uses a a torque converter in much the same way it just always is slipping until you apply power where it clamps as much as it is needed. You might be thinking of clutches in the differential because some diffs have clutches to engage different wheels.

I take it you have never rebuilt an automatic transmission.

This is a portion of the diagram from the C5 service manual for an A4....see if you can find the word clutch...

That's my point. Did you look at the diagram? There are clutches in an automatic transmission. I'm not trying to split hairs here, but for the sake of accuracy, there are clutches in an auto.

Op, you are not crazy. If you are in fact rebuilding an auto, there are clutches within the tranny.

Are you looking to rebuild your trans yourself? There are multiple clutch packs in your trans... the kits are not very expensive, but it's a very labor intensive project and takes some skill..

I wouldn't use anything but Alto Red Eagle clutch packs in mine. I just rebuilt my A4 and used the Alto 9 clutch 3-4 pack (OEM has 6), a 'Beast' sun shell, HD 5 pinion gear sets, Kevlar power band, Transgo 4l60E HD2 kit, HD servos, etc. I've had it in for about a week and a half and it's a great setup! I'll change out the fluid and filter next week before heading down to Laguna Seca for the Leman's series weekend.

Try this place:
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/al...ower_packs.htm
And no, I'm not a reseller for them, I just happened to need a rebuild recently and decided to beef the crap out of it while we were in there.

Here's a pretty good write-up on how an auto works:
