Default seat belts appear to sensitive

HI

bought a set of used seatbelts for a C5 and they came already puled out, now i took off the rubber bands and they retraced perfectly but to pull them out again is a huge chore. Ive had to pull them a little bit and it will lock on me and and release ever so slightly to release the lock and then pull again and repeat 230948320948 times before they are out all the way. then after all that work let go and they shoot back into the retractor!.

I know belts have some inertia to them and that angling them will cause them to lock up but ive tried putting them in a vice to hold them steady even but they just appear overly sensitive

any ideas on this or did i just get a funky set...

THANKS

When you put them in the vise, make sure they are at the same angle and oreninted (sp) exactly the same that they are when mounted in the car.

The retractors have a hanging weight inside. If you miss it by 2 or 3 degrees, it does what you describe. Might not be your problem, but we tried. Let us know what you find.

Both belts did that to me. I had to pull them all the way out and retract them and they worked fine. Mine were twisted when retracted, so now I just make sure they retract properly. Dont know if this helps but just thought I would add.

I bought a set of belts brand new from GM and they did exactly what you've described until I bolted them in place and then they worked great.

The C5 belts have a cinch mode that is activated by pulling the belt all the way out. Once the belt is out it will retract but the ratchet will keep it from pulling back out until the belt is fully retracted. It sounds like you are getting them into cinch mode and not getting them to retract all the way.

This feature permits the user to run the seat all the way back, then tighten the belt in cinch mode followed by running the seat forward until the belt feels like it is going to cut them in half. With that setup you are held in the car pretty well and can pull more Gs in the corners than with an uncinched belt.
