I got on my car pretty hard today, and was shifting around 6k RPM when I noticed a strong burning smell. It was very noticeable around 65mph with the windows down after accelerating hard. All the temps were perfect, oil pressure normal, and the car drove great. I'm not sure if the car has ever been driven that hard before, but the smell eventually subsided. It's a '00 MN6.
Maybe when you get the engine up to 6k rpm oil starts to leak from a valve cover gasket.
Does it smell leak oil or clutch material?
Also check under the rear end to see if you have a diff. leak on hard accell.
I don't think its the clutch because that is a terrible smell and you would really know it. Probably some oil out of your valve covers. I had that problem last year just got some new gaskets. Check around your headers for any dark spots.

Any ideas on the smell? Clutch? Is it normal?
Yes. Yes. And Yes.
Good? No. Now what? Start saving your nickels and dimes. That's my guess without smelling the smell. If it smelled like burning brakes it's your clutch.

I had a small leak in my tranny pan which was getting burned on my exhaust. Left lots of black burn marks and smells not so good. Any one of your fluids that leaks somewhere hot will smell aweful. Check into it. Put your car on a lift to examine further.

You were able to smell the tranny fluid burning on the exhaust at 65 mph with the windows down?
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to put the car on ramps today and check it out ... I'm thinking a slight oil leak somewhere. Hard to believe it's the clutch since it doesn't slip and only has 25k miles on it, but you never know.
Sounds like the clutch, try this test, put it in 5th or 6th and floor the throttle. If the rpms increase without a corresponding increase in speed, your clutch is bad.
My car does the same thing. I doubt it's the clutch as it's fairly new. I'm pretty sure it's the valve cover gaskets or a small exhaust leak. No biggie.
