Default Changed Oil now Engine Knocks

I changed the oil on my 2002 and now the engine knocks until it is warmed up. I had a 2001 and it did the same thing from the time it was new but not my 2002. It was made in August so I figured that it had the coated pistons and would not knock. The oil was changed at 1250 miles with Mobil 5W-30 and a Mobil 1 filter. I filled the filter with oil before putting it on and installed a magnetic plug. Does the factory put something in the oil at the factory? Is it really a special break in oil? Should I go back to the original GM filter? Will this knock go away? Has anyone else had this problem? Baffled!

Mine certainly does better with 10-30. With 5-30 it sounded like I had someone tap dancing in the engine compartment. :cuss

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I will try the 10W-30 next time.

My 99 has been quiet. I have been using 10W-30 Mobil 1, starting at 2,000 miles.

Very interesting comment about what comes in the engine from the factory. I have always head they come with 5/30 Mobile One which is the same oil GM suggests for changes.

My new 2002 engine came from the factory in Brighton, MI with something in the crankcase. I personally checked the dip stick before the engine was installed and noticed it was really clean....it looked 'clear' to me rather than the tint you see in fresh Mobile One.

Anybody know for sure what the guys at the engine factory use?

I only have 850 miles on the new engine and it has not used oil. I plan to do the first oil chage at about 1500 to 2000 miles.

ps: The new engine is strong compared to the old 2001. For the price charged something tells me it may be Z06 long block hiding under my generic 2001 fuel covers and old style air box. Everything else is new.

Dick.. easy enough to tell whether or not you have a Z06 block.. The LS1 block is much lighter in color than the Z blocks.. you may need to see them both to see the difference, but it IS there and is a documented difference...

Sounds like the "piston slap when cold" problem.

I'll have to take a close look at the block color. I recall the heads have a good shine
compared to the old engine. I really don't care if it is a LS1 or LS6 as long as it does
not use oil or smell like burned oil. So far so good.

i thought the engine factory was in canada. the ZO-6 blocks can be identified by the groove machined into the top of the block right in front of the passenger side cly heads. regular blocks have only a flat spot there. :chevy

The factory may be in Canada...mine was shipped from Brighton, MI. I sure wish someone would post a picture of the groove. It is very hard to see anything once
the engine is installed

When I got my 98 Coupe, the dealership put Mobil 1 5-30w in it and I was ok with that for a while because it was winter at the time, but as soon as it warmed up down here, I put Mobil 1 10-30w in it and have driven it with that weight of oil ever since. Since I live in Florida, this is a much better oil protection over 5-30w, which is primarily intended for very cold climates(below 32F). Also, your engine will not knock as easily as it does with a lighter weight oil. HTH. Peace. T-Bone.
