I have a flashing check engine light
the passenger side engine area under the plastic engine covers is sparking and its making a tick tick tick sound. if I give it alittle gas the engine runs rough. Is this a cheap fix? I just got this engine and it is running very good.. this just seemed to happen while the car was at rest, idling and when I drive off it started.. Im not a mechanic but I know it is something electrical.. the coil packs on top of the engine? spark plugs? The other side of the engine is fine. and it idles fine except for the tic ticking. anybody? I dont want to drive it this way to take it to the shop.. if something is loose maybe one of you can tell me what it is? thanks

Let's see, something is arcing below the cover-did you even pull the cover off to LOOK? Find the misfiring cylinder and start checking the wiring. Coil pack or plug wire (most likely). The misfire will cause the flashing CEL.

As Doug mentioned, a persistent misfire will cause the check engine light to flash. Check under the hood tonight with the engine running and the engine bay DARK and you should be able to see the flashing caused by the arcing. You will probably have to disconnect the hood light to get it dark enough.

Found the problem! The guys that installed the engine didnt put the spark plug wires in tight enough. one was off completely, and the other needed an adjustment so it would click in. car runs great, cleared code 0300 misfire, but the sparking melted the wire insulation over the firewall, no big deal. I got zapped though..ouch
