Default z06 cam in ls1

i could get my hands on a stock ls6 valvetrain as well as the cam for almost free... my question is would i have to have the car tuned to be able to run the car and if i could... would it be safe to go wot and run it a few times without tunning it or is that a must?

The problem is the amount of work to do the job...why not just spend a little more and get a more HP cam - do it once, and that's it.

With a Z06 cam, its not that radical that the car can't learn to run it for all intents and purposes - but to get the most out of it...a tune would be required...problem #2, tune can run you $450ish....(dyno tune anyway) and you will now be kicking yourself in the butt that you didn't go a little more aggressive with the cam afterward.

without the LS6 valves you could very well run in to valve float (with the stock LS6 springs). running stiffer springs with the stock heavier LS1 valves would rob it of some of its improvement.. i'm sure there is more..

with a tiny Z06 cam, you wotn need to change anything on the valvetrain....dont waste your time....get a good cam to start with. I doubt you will even feel a difference..

cost of gaskets, parts, fluids, tuning, for like 10-15 hp? NO WAY

at least put on that QTP split timing cover so once your bored with the cam, (prob after 2 weeks) you can swap it out for a real cam without going through the entire debacle again.

Too much work for too little payoff.

You will also have to get car re-tuned, which will set you back about $500.

Wait till you have the money to do it right.

If I were you and you could get this stuff for free, I would ditch the Z06 cam and have the Z06 heads re-worked for better flow. Maybe upgrade the rockers and then buy a more radical cam to suit your power needs and how you want to drive the car. Cams themselves are not all that expensive; it is the time and labor to put them in and get the car tuned that will cost you the most. Good luck with your project.

Man, you must have a lot of free time on your hands... I'm sure there are seasoned pros that can do a head/cam swap pretty fast, but for the layperson, it takes some time. If it were me, I would just wait and do one cam swap. Not only will it save you time, it will be a more noticeable difference when you go up to the bigger cam, instead of 15 now and another 20 later.

Make it worth your while if your going to do a cam swap and go with something that you will notice. Almost everyone you ask that has done a cam swap wish they have gone bigger. I'm pretty happy with my G5X3 112lsa but with the stock Z06 cam, you will definitely wish you have gone bigger.
