Default oil pressure

I was wondering what oil pressure is normal for these cars. After my car has warmed up, at idle you see around 20 psi, it will fluctuate from 20 - 40 depending on thr RPM. Is that low? Does the synthetic oil run at a lower PSI, or can it change because of the viscocity?

Mine shows 30~32 psi when hot, and DIC shows oil temp between 200~215 F.

I'm running 5w-30 Mobil 1 full synthetic with NAPA Gold oil filter. I've used about 4 different oil filters over the years with the Mobil 1 and all give the same oil pressure readings.

Do a search for this ... there are TONS of threads about "normal oil pressure".

Minimum oil pressure needed to run is 6 psi, however, if your's ever got that low, then its time for a rebuild. An engine with a lot of miles will run down near 20 when idling and hot.

Although it might depend on year/model/engine, your pressures seem low by comparision to both our 2000 Vette's LS1 engine and our 2000 TransAm's LS1 engine, (with mobil-1 5w30 synthetic and Castrol Syntec synthetic 5w30 -- both with Mobil-1 oil filters).

The typical start-up idle RPM cold pressure is 50-60, and after warm-up, at idle 30ish and at highway speeds, 40-60.

What brand/grade synthetic is in your car? What brand/model oil filter?

If your running a thinner grade (e.g. 0-30), it might reduce your pressure.

ALso, a clogged or cheap (e.g. fram orange) oil filter might cause reduced oil pressure because the bypass valve is open (bad as the oil is not being filtered).

Also, some members report problems with the oil pressure gauge, however, most report high pressure, not low.

Default 10 PSI per 1000 RPM?

Not to hijack the thread but has anyone ever seen oil in a C5 that achieves 10 PSI for every 1000 RPM? I've read through the entire article linked below, that first tipped me off to this "gold standard", but have never seen these results in practice.

The gold standard is that all engines should have a pressure of 10 PSI for every 1,000 RPM of operation, not more, not less. After all, you do need some pressure to move that oil along, but only enough pressure, not more.

BTW, Another interesting read on oil is http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

Well, my 02 Zee makes 30 psi at idle (800 rpm) with 200+ deg F oil ... it doesn't take 3000 rpm to get 30 psi, so I guess that breaks the "gold standard" as it says:

"The gold standard is that all engines should have a pressure of 10 PSI for every 1,000 RPM of operation, not more, not less."

I could maybe believe that an engine needs AT LEASE 10 psi per 1000 rpm to survive ... but the "not less" part doesn't make sense.
