Default 01 Coupe Issue Security/Column Lock

So i went to turn on my car, and a puff of smoke came out from behind the steering wheel. It smelt as if something shorted out or caught fire. After this, the car runs fine but it shuts down when put into gear. I am assuming this is related to the error showing check column lock, and the security light flashing. The car thinks it been stolen and cuts the fuel off when trying to drive it. Or the column lock has shorted and the car shuts the fuel off assuming you cant drive with a locked column. So the question lies here, what caused this, what could the issue be, and also was this one of the recalls for this year model?

Get your self a CLB and install it cause GM won't fix it free for you any longer. Read the first few pages of the FAQ's about the column lock in the stickey at the top of the Tech section. It will answer a lot of questions. Corvettes of Dallas, Corvettes of Houston and Thunder Racing are just a few of the Forum Sponsors that sell the CLB, about $50 shipped.
So let me get this right, (my car is at the dealership right now and they are looking into it to get the official reason on what went wrong, or went out. After that, If they do find that the relay is shot, they will just install a new relay? Which potentially has the ability to go out again? How long and complicated is this CLB procedure? Can you tell me more of what the CLB actually is and or does?

First, do you know if a recall had been performed on the car?
The last recall would have removed the lockplate and installed a bypass relay (Harness K).
If the column did not lock when the key was removed, it either had the recall done, or someone has already installed an aftermarket CLB relay.
It is possible the column lock actuator failed, and that would be the most likely cause if no recall has been installed. (since there is no relay to fail).
If a recall has been performed, then the actuator could fail, or the Harness K relay could fail. Most likely, the relay failed.
The purpose of the relay is to simulate the actuator and send the correct signal back to the BCM so that the fuel does not get cut. The aftermarket CLB is just a relay, and performs the same function as the relay in the Harness K kit.

If the dealer has the car, I would make sure the lockplate is removed so that you do not have to worry about the column physically locking.
Then, you can either install the GM Harness K relay, or install an aftermarket version to simulate the actuator. The GM harness keeps the actuator in the circuit, the aftermarket version does not.
However, I think the GM Harness K will also work with the actuator disconnected.

Well the GM dealer called me back and here is the scenario:
Tex the answer to your question is yes. The steering column didn't lock up so the plate must have been removed and had a previous recall done.

The car previously had the recall fixed on it, now they are going to re-install a new harness i am assuming, and it sounds like it is going to be free of charge. So I am just going to let them fix it if its for free.

Sorry for your bad breaks but glad you will be back on the road soon. From our experience the RECALL does not always FIX the long-term CLB issue. You might still want to still consider a Bypass that we offer. But, ask around and see what other have to say. If we can be of help --PLEASE call me direct.

I appreciate your concerns, I already ordered a CLB to install on the vehicle. I am not sure where it was purchased from, my father actually went behind my back and purchased one for me so... It should arrive soon i assume. Let you know if i have any issues with the installation.
