Loud knocking sound
My new 2001 coupe (A4) makes a single loud knocking sound when
accelerating from a stop. It happens about 80% of the time and at
normal acceleration. It sounds like it is coming from the rear of the
car and does not occur at any other time, only from a dead stop.
Has anyone heard of a similar problem? The car is still under
warranty

Suggest taking the tech for a ride and demonstrating the problem to him. Better than dealer personnel flailing on the car themselves. Plus two in the car permits the tech to listen and pinpoint while you drive.

Rust on the axle shaft splines (wear it goes through the hub) will cause this :yesnod:Have the hub nut removed and spray WD-40 into the spline.If the noise goes away,the spline should be removed and lubed.The rust is caused from slight spline movement under high pressure...

Did some driving today with my lady. We agreed it almost sounds like something is hitting the bottom of the car. But it is hard to tell.
We'll probably just take it to the dealer's shop if it continues. I plan to crawl under and bang on a few things to see if anything is obvious.
The rust comment could be a real possiblility. The car is only driven on the weekends, so rust build-up could be the cause.
