I have had a rear end leak for awhile now. Would notice a "quarter sized" spot every so often. Since putting the car away for the winter its been sitting in the garage and I checked it yesterday and notice a huge 6 by 4 inch mess. I am not sure if its just coming from the side of the diff or front as well where it meets the tranny. Anyone ever had it leak this bad? I assume cause the seals are now not expanding with heat/use that its just draining out. Hopefully my pinion and ring haven't suffered anything.
Was just surprised at the amount I saw. Seals and and Clutch packs are on the fix list for 2009.
I had a leak between the trans and diff both myself and the mechanic figured it was the output shaft until we got it up in the air and relealized it was the gasket between the two.
Thankfully it was still covered by GM because the cost of removing the trans from the car to replace the gasket was costly. Not sure what information you would like or want would be useful to you. Let us know.

Take care.
Good info ! I do plan on removing the tranny from the car anyway so I went ahead and bought the large o-ring that I belive is the gasket between the two. I hope there is not broken parts...I am doubting it as the car seemed to drive fine and I noticed nothing other than this oil slick of Diff fluid. The smell is unmistakable
I have had two leaks repaired on my '01 even though it has low mileage.... I guess that can actually be the cause. One was the left side if the differential which is pretty common. $375 or so to repair at the Chevy dealer. The other was more of what you describe. Towards the back of the tranny where the two halves of the tranny casing join together (front and back). The liquid gasket seal broke down and was leaking. It became progressively worse. $1500+ repair due to extensive labor.

Ya..sounds the same ! Mine is also a 01 and as I said I am gonna replace all the seals am redo the clutch packs at the same time.
I will be doing this at a buddy's house on a lift. Will probably throw in my 3rd clutch in 2 years as well Car only has 24,000 miles on it.....Although the motor is not the original
Mine was an '01 also... Wonder if it was something with that year. I just thought it was because I let it sit during the winters and the gasket mat'l dried out. My problem started in the spring.

'01 A4 Coupe here.............80K miles and the rear has been out twice for leak repairs. Seem to get about 35K miles dry and then the drip. The last time, all seals/gaskets in the rear were done including the one b/t the trans and rear so hopefully will be good now.
