Default Dash lites....'99 FRC

Recently purchased "99 FRC. Having some issues with the dash lites. With the key in the "ON" position dash lites illuminate. When the car is started the lites go out. This occurs when the car is shut off. The dash lites are not on and when the key is put into the "ON" position the dash lites come on. Need some ideas please!!

First thing I would do is check for any evidence of water around the BCM. Pull the panel in the front of the passenger foot well and check this area very carefully. If the BCM gets wet it can cause all sorts of extraneous electrical issues.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Ok, you need to tell us if its dark where the car is and if it has a twilight sentinel system in it or not. Have you checked the simple things like the dimmer? The dash lights are controlled by two different input sources via the BCM. For cars with a sentinel for sure, not sure about no sentinel, in daylight conditions the brightness is controlled by the small light sensor at the top of the DIC Controller. When the lights come on either manually or by sentinel, the brightness is controlled by the dimmer ****. Both inputs send the brightness request to the BCM which in turn, either raises or lowers the indicator levels for the background illuminations for the cluster, radio and hvac.
There's a possibility that the headlamp switch itself may be the source of the problem. Have you checked to see if the tail lights are coming on? Another thing that can happen in this same area is the headlamps themselves may turn on, but not raise. Either the headlamp switch again or the headlamp controller..fyi only.

My dash lights come on when I open the door, with the courtesy lamps and will time out with the c-lamps if I don't start the car. When I start the car they all turn off, If I turn on the head lights the dash lights come on. And I thought that was normal.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I replaced the multi function switch (the turn/cruise/light switch) on the column. That was it. The key is here.....if the dash lites and the tail lites don't work when the switch is turned on for the headlites....it is this switch. Thanks for everyone's help. This is an awesome place to get some very helpful hints.

Don't throw away your old multi function switch. If you do a search on it, you will find detailed threads on how to disassemble it and repair it. Or you could sell in the classified section. Hope you enjoy your FRC. I have a '99 FRC also, and it is still running strong at 158k miles. By the way, I had to repair my multi function switch earlier this year...
