Default Body squeeks making me crazy!

I've got a 2000 coupe, 56,000 Miles, and all is running well. I do get some annoying squeeks that seem pretty loud at this point, and I seem to notice even while listening to the radio. They happen when the car hits small bumps or hops in the road, and are very high pitched squeeks, like the sound of metal to metal, or a small bird chirping. They happen when the weather is very dry, and cold and as it is now in New England.

The sound seems to be coming from the bottom center of the car, most of the time, but at times it sounds like it's coming from in front of the driver.

Anybody else experience this problem? Is this typical of c-5's ? Could it be the torque tube wiggling around a bit as the frame flexes? Is there a spot you can shoot some WD-40 or silicone on to get rid of the CHIRPS? I just replaced the shocks and that did nothing to fix this issue, despite my guess that this could be suspension related.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bluemill

I've got the same squeaks and it seem like it's coming from under the dash in front of the driver. Not a big deal with me but it can be annoying when it's cold and dry like you said.

Could be sway bar bushings. Might need to pull the bushings, clean the bushings and sway bars, put a little lithium grease on bushings where they contact the bars and reinstall.
Easy job once you get the car high enough to get access to the bushings.
Good luck.

My 98 was driving me nuts at about the same mileage. Got it up on a lift and pulled on the cross members a few times to get the car bouncing which pin pointed the problem.

Default Cross members?

I'm not sure what you mean by that, cross members, did you mean upper and lower A arms?

If I put the car on on 4 jackstands could I get the same effect?

What was your final fix method?

Thanks,

Bluemill

Welcome to the world of used cars! The corvette's stiff suspension promotes a squeaky environment. But remember there is a solution for any level of squeak...really loud exhaust!

Typically the car doesn't squeak like other cars. The stiff structure keeps the body from twisting. Most squeaks are in the suspension or if in the interior they are from the seat rubbing against the door sill trim when somebody is sitting in the seat.

Jackstands wouldn't work as the car needs to be on the "ground" (drive on lift) in order for the suspension to move. You may be able to use two sets of ramps - drive up on one set, jack the rear and lower the car onto a second set or something else up to the task. On the forum under "C5 General" is "C5 Hydraulic Jack versus Jack Stand Positions; Wood Ramps and Wood Lifting ‘Pads’" which highlight lifting do/don'ts and crossmembers. My problem was (like many) the swaybar bushings, but it wasn't obvious until I was under the car and got is bouncing on the lift.
