Default Clutch Problem

The clutch pedal on my 1998 Corvette stuck to the floor after backing out of my driveway yesterday morning. Once on the street I couldn't get the car out of reverse, and I had to lift the pedal off the floor with my foot. Once in neutral, I started pumping the pedal in and out. The first few times it stuck again, then it would hesitate to come out smoothly, and finally it worked again.

On my drive into work, I noticed several times that it was slow to come off the floor. At the next light I would pump the clutch pedal several times to bring back normal clutch action and continue on my way for a few more miles.

On my drive home, there were no issues at all....

The fluid in my car's clutch is always kept clean. I use Ranger's method very frequently (the fluid never gets discolored) to prevent this exact thing from happening. I am using Valvoline synthetic dot 3 & 4 fluid. The clutch and transmission in my car are all new as of about a year and a half ago (maybe 12,000 miles).

What could the issue be in this case? I have also noted that since it has been getting colder I've been having occassional issues getting into 2nd gear during the first few miles of my morning drive. Could that also be related?

any fluid leaking from the clutch assembly?!? If so could be a blown seal on the slave cyl.. when you did the clutch and tranny did you replace both the master and slave cylinders? i.e. could be a bad seal in the master..

I am thinking it could be a bad slave cylinder. How long has it been in there?

Try putting your car in first gear, pushing in the clutch, and then starting the car. If the car moves I am betting it is the slave cylinder because that is what happened to me.

Hope you figure out the problem.

I have not noticed any leaks or loss of fluid. Looking over the transmission shop's repair bill (done before I bought the car) I can see that the previous owner's extended warranty company forked out $6K in parts and labor for the clutch and nearly every part in the transmission to be replaced. I don't see anything about the master or slave cylinders being replaced though.

I tried this test. The car didn't move at all.

Actually, I haven't been able to duplicate the sticking clutch. It has worked perfectly each day since that morning. Second gear, on the other hand, continues to be difficult to get into after the car has been parked for a while. After a few miles of driving everything shifts fine again until the next time the car is parked for a while.

I'm at a loss....
