If it came with a screen, the screen should stay. The screen makes the driveability better by preventing erratic events due to non-linear airflow across the sensor. If you want no screen, buy the Z06 MAF and re-write your MAF table. JMHO
The '01 LS6 with MAF screen and the '02-'04 w/out. GMPT engineers left the screen on the MAF to 'straighten' out air flow. Over looked on the '01 ZO6 M/Y it was removed in later model years because it was not needed as the air flow has a relatively straight shot from the air fliter box to the MAF with the new ( LS6 '01 M/Y) air box and larger lid opening in LS6 '02 M/Y. According to Asst Chief engineer John Juriga; the addition of the '02-'04 Z06 air box and the removal of the MAF strightener screen brought approx 5 hp increase.
Any use of the MAF with an air intake duct that curves just before the MAF, needs the straightener ( or screen) for the MAF to sense acturatley. Which is why , in GM's conventional wisdom , they left the screen on. We have been de-screening the MAF in conjuction with rerouting the ducting with no problems .
I have added the '02 Z06 air box and removed the screen ( plus swapped out the '01 Z06 exhaust for the '02 Z06 exhaust.). Had the PCM recalibrated .No problems with low speed drivability as some have reported with just the removal of the OEM MAF straightener screen on LS1 applications.
