I swore that I'd never start another "Detector" post again, but here goes:
As discussed ad nauseum in my previous post, the Feb 2002 issue of Car & Driver has a radar detector test. The range of the Valentine in "city" mode (Valentine calls it "Advanced Logic") was slightly less than in the "Normal" mode, on all three bands, except for instant-on Ka band. There, the Valentine range was really short- only about 1/10 of a mile. Bummer. But when I look in the instruction manual for my Valentine purchased in May 2001, the info on page 14 says that the city/advanced logic mode only changes the response to X band. So Ka should be uneffected, and perform the same regardless of how the mode is set. Something is wrong here, either the Valentine manual or the C&D test. Can anyone explain?
In case it helps, the online version of the C&D test says:
"Please note: The X-band, K-band, and Ka-band graphs in this story contain corrected data from the version that appeared in print".
Also, I don't mean this to come over as a smart alec retort, but you might also try asking Mike Valentine directly. I've had occasion to call the boys at Valentine1 on several occasions and they have always been extremely helpful to me.
No offense taken, your idea is good and I was planning to call Valentine tomorrow if this thread did not resolve the issue.
I went to http://www.caranddriver.com and found the story about the test, but could not find the graphs. The only diagram I saw was for the laser fields of view. Can you help me find the graphs? Maybe that can avoid me and a million other people calling Valentine for the same question. Thanks.
Half way down the page, there's an inset block marked "By the Numbers". If you click on X-band range, K-band range, or Ka-band range, you'll get the "corrected data".
The fact that Valentine1 references the C&D article suggests that they're probably familiar with it!
Thanks, I got it this time. The first time I pulled up the article, that "By the Numbers" box was just a blank spot.
Now I can understand why they rated the Valentine so highly.
Tomorrow I will try to figure out how to print the graphs from the website. Til then, goodnight to all.
