I have a stock 92 LT1 vette that has only 53000 miles and has been babied but when you accelerate quick and reach about 4500 rpms it stalls out right before shifting like the fuel has been cut off or the spark restricted. I have been told this year did not have a rev limiter. I have placed in park and I do not get the stalling problem when reving. I have had the fuel filter changed with no luck. I had it in the dealership for them to look at. They tried to tell me that the was an intake leak that was allowing oil down into the distributor. They wanted to replace the distributor and intake gasket. After refusing and returning home for futher investigation there was no such problem - a little dirty but no sign of oil. Any ideas of what is causing this?
It sure sounds like a fuel pump to me. Runs fine at idle, even low RPM's, then hit 4500 and dropps off? If it were electrical, it would do it other times than high rev if it ran at all. My guess is soon it will progressively do it at lower revs. Assuming it's a 16 year old fuel pump, it seems obvious. Get a fuel pressure guage on it.
You might wanna post this in the C4 section as you will most likely receive more attention there. Good luck with the problem.
I agree. It could be ignition or it could be the OptiSpark distributor which is susceptible to fluid damage. Usually the damage is due to coolant leaking from the water pump but it may also come from oil leaking from the front of the intake manifold. You could have a fuel delivery problem or an ignition problem. Igniting the mixture in an engine that is free reving at a very small throttle opening is different than in an engine under load where more fuel and air is being consumed.
