Default Differential different - Auto/Manual

Hello

Is the differential carrier different between an automatic and standard transmission on a 2001?

I thought they were the same, the reason I am questioning it, is I saw on Ebay a Differential for a C5 and they said for a Manual transmission. All others don't specify, so I assumed no difference.

Thanks

They are all interchangeable as a unit. The autos came with a 2.73 or 3.15. The manuals are 3.42 only. To my understanding, the only thing that makes the 2.73 setup unique, is that you cannot simply drop in a different gearset(3.42, 3.73, etc), where as the 3.15 you can.

The Auto diff. has a plate that the manual diff. doesn't. Its easy to swap the plate from auto to manual, I did.

So an Auto that currently has a 2.73 can accept a 3.42 without any mods?

I have a 3.42 Z06 rear in mine. I would guess that all you would need to do is bring over that plate Ohio referred to.

Only if you swap the WHOLE unit. You cannot put 3.xx gearing in a 2.xx series carrier.

If you change the rear-end like I did and have an automatic; you will need to re-tune the transmission in order to shift properly.
