Default LS1 engine bore question

What is the largest bore and stroke I can do on my 2004 LS1 block? I am thinking of taking the engine out and doing a forged bottom end, but want to know what is the limit on that block?

I know the hot ticket is the 402 LS2, so I am hoping to get at least a 383 out of the LS1.

I'm thinking that's your limit.

3.905 bore + 4.00" stroke = 383 cubic inches. The 3.905 bore (cylinder hone)is only worth one cubic inch. The 400" stroke makes up the remaining additional 36 cubic inches.

It is possible to go .010" overbore on your newer block (3.908"), but there are more piston choices for .007" over (3.905").
Eagle, and a few others, make a 4.100" stroke crank, but again, the common choice is 4.00".
Personally, I would reuse the stock crank and spend that money on good heads, pistons, and rods.
A strong 347 will make plenty of power in a C5 (480 RWHP, or more, if done properly). The drivetrains in these cars just don't like all that extra torque.
I like the idea of these 4.00" and larger bores/blocks (LS2, LS3, LS7), but don't think a stroker crank is necessary for a LSx build.

sell your bottom end and buy a 416 short block for around 4500 or bite the bullet and get a supercharger. forging a ls1 is going to cost about 3500 to do it right and you will be maxed out at 383. also the newer ls3 blocks are stronger and have a larger bore for better heads.

I guess I should have clarified more. I already have heads, cam, intake, etc. You can see that in my sig. I am going to buy an A&A supercharger so before doing that I am going to forge and build the bottom end. I figure if I am going to pull it to forge it, I might as well bore it out also.

As stated above you really can't bore this block, the cast in cylinder liners are very thin and the max oversize you can go is right around .010 and in my opinion thats probably stretching it.

I wouldn't bother with boring it. Depending on how much power you plan on I'd put good FI forged pistons and rods in. You'll need a forged crank if you going to really push things. If not your crank may do fine.

FI will get you there quicker than anything else and probably cheaper in the long run. Just remember the more power the more changes are necessary to the drivetrain. Minitubbing to get more rubber, drag radials that wear out quickly, built drivetrain including tranny, diff, halfshafts, couplers, yada yada. It never stops. Just a tad of FI and you'll be ok.

As a matter of fact, I believe the '97-'98 LS1 blocks can't even take the .010 overbore.
