I have a 98a4 coupe with 45k miles that is stock other than a Corsa Touring exhaust and X pipe. Over the last year it seems that the slight noise/vibration in gear at idle has gottens slighly worse. In reverse while moving steering wheel seems to make it worse. Do the engine mounts or exhaust hangers need to be replaced? It feels like it is right under the drivers seat but of course it could be coming from the cat area or something. Has installing the X pipe allowed more movement of the exhaust? Help please. Thx.

You might want to check the serpentine belt tensiors or or the pulleys. I had this show up on my 98 a couple of months back. Replaced both the lower (AC) tensioner and pulley, problem resolved.

Do you happen to have an after-market intake filter (oil-type)?

2001 A4 here - believe it or not, I had the same issue & it turned out to be the alternator..............the clutch on the front had started to crack/separate and man did it make a horrible sound - and like yours, it got progressively worse until we figured it out.
Replaced with a new GM alternator (newer design like on the C6s) and new belts and the car idles so quiet and smooth, a friend at work said they couldn't believe it was a Vette !!
