Default got rear ended, hidden damage ?

got hit in the rear coming home from work. lady in hundai hit me square in the rear, car lurched forward and threw me back in the seat hard enought to leave me with a sore neck and back. got out and, except for a couple of scratches under the lisence plate area, no apparent damage. don't know enough about the C5 yet to know if i should look for anything hidden. any suggestions ?

From my experience here in Austin with the lovely traffic we have!! I know that even though there may not be any apparent damage stress cracks can start to form in the paint around the area where you got hit. NO GOOD!! I hope you got her insurance!! GOOD LUCK!!

Been there. Suggest taking the car to a body shop that specializes in Corvettes and have them pull the rear fascia for a close inspection of it and the foam protection blanket that it covers. You need to ensure that blanket is intact and undamaged so that it will perform properly in the event you are rearended again...perish the thought. They will also check for proper alignment of the exhaust, which tends to be displaced by the impact. Question to resolve is whether it resettled with the proper alignment.

Too much at stake to refrain from professional evaluation.

Ranger - I knew you'd be helping out with this one - what is the foam protection blanket and where does it go?

Ive had this happen twice in my C5.

Most likely the protective styrofoam will need to be replaced.

After that there is a hollow flat bar that the foam attaches to. Harder impacts will deform that bar, and will require is to be cut off and a new one welded on.

After that, and what you want to most importantly look at is the tubbing in the rear. It quite often will crack from a hard impact. Since this material is high pressure molded. You may want to look at replacement of that, since it can never really be repaired 100% like factory. Youd probably never know if they repaired it since carpet covers it up. Depends on what you want there.

Just know that the rubber fascia hides a lot of damage.

There is no "foam blanket" under there.

here is a pic of the items under the fascia (not mine):

Here is a pic of the cross bar that easily compresses with a large impact

Here is a pic of mine of what is needed to replaced to rear tub on a vert. Im sure similar on a coupe.

OliverC5,

Been wondering how you made out with the squeaks....

Think Kewlbrz answered the question you posed. And I agree with his post.

Take care,

Ranger

Had a meeting with the insurance adjustor and the shop that fixed the car........he asked me to give them one more chance to bond the tub properly - I'll probably pick it up today...wish me luck.

David,
I took my car to Bill Bucks in Venice to have my passenger side door replaced after someone (don't know who) practically tore it off...My car is magnetic red and they are having a terrible, terrible time matching and blending the color..Where do u plan on going to have the work done?..Sunset is okay, I just don't like the appraiser named Steve..Not the friendliest of people...

If hit hard enough, the trunk floor will become unbonded from the rear frame causing a horrible creeking noise...Seen this on several occasions :yesnod:

i am going to palmcoast autobody in ellenton. i built a house for the guy and if he screws me i can always not do warranty service on his house. (that's a joke) his shop is approved by my insurer st farm, just in case i don't like what her insurer comes up with. her insurer met life, asked me to go to *** chevy in bradenton. i go there for service anyway so why not. i will have them check the rear deck
thanks again

Make sure they fix it right. Check your exhaust system too if it might have been hit.

"insurance approved shops" are actually a bad thing ;)

You have the legal right to take it wherever you want.
