My understanding is that the Powerloader does not actually change the engine programming much on the 2001 cars, but makes a big difference in how the transmission shifts. Specifically, the tranny is much more willing to downshift under partial throttle, instead of waiting until you get almost full throttle and then -SLAM- downshift. Since I like to run road courses with my car, that could be a big improvement since a hard downshift during a corner could spin the car. I've been manually downshifting during the braking zone but that's still a bit klutzy.
Questions:
1. Is my understanding of the downshift mods correct? Does it work well on a road course?
2. Can I "de-program" the Powerloader program, when taking the car in for warranty work?
3. Any other things I should know about the program?
4. How can I contact them for more info?
Thanks.
Re: Questions about Powerloader with auto trans... (Gearhead Jim)
1) yes, it does make the car downshift under light throttle; I don't know about the road course because I haven't run one, but I would imagine it would help. You may not want to ever install a shift kit whcih will make the shifts even firmer and can cause a problem through a turn
2) you cannot de-program; the original program is lost (not stored as with the hypertech3). The dealer can reflash the pcm to stock but you are trying to it hide from them. IMHO I doubt they care.
4) TTS/Steve Cole (sorry, don't have the web addr
Re: Questions about Powerloader with auto trans... (Gearhead Jim)
It seems our well informed CF members have already given you great insight to the Powerloader II by TTs powersystems. They are correct!
So let me tell you from a member that has gone the gamut with programs out there for the 2001 that I would ONLY trust Steve Cole to program my car . The man KNOWS what he is doing and is not above discussing the needs of his customers to give them the best result he can.He Listens! The PLII is NOT a cookie cutter program. It's produced for i car at a time and it's re-programmable as you continue to modify your car or change your driving habits.
The 2001 is not a 2000 or 1999 ,it's a 2001 and the program is altogether different.GM included a torque managenmt system in the PCM and it really can be a PITA for programming puposes. That's why only a few vendors have even approached the 2001-02. Steve Cole at TTS has got it down!:yesnod:
My only suggestion is if your intention is to install a aftermarket converter, then you really should consider a Transgo shift kit. It's a wonderful addition to the A4 with the PLII.It is absolutely the best SOTP mod I've done.
It just brings the whole drivetrain together .Think about it! Best of luck:D

Re: Questions about Powerloader with auto trans... (Gearhead Jim)
I agree, it's excellent. It feels like this is how the car should have been in the first place. I was wondering how different it would be, if you don't get down on it and want to cruise mildly around town, no problem, if you want half or three quarter throttle, it's there. Let me put it this way, if the first Vette you drove had the PL II, you would be Very Happy with the performance , if you then drove one without the PL II, you would think something was wrong with it, because it would be a non responsive DOG. :nonod:
Re: Questions about Powerloader with auto trans... (JackAttack)
I haven't had any problems. Since I have the a lower thermostat, the powerloader kicks the fans on sooner. About the highest I get is 205-206 while at a long stand still. Before, I have seen it as high as 225. The Louisana Summers are brutal to say the least.
