Default low speed turning thump

I have an odd feeling that I might have a difficult time discribing. But here goes.

When I back out of the garage at low speed I feel what feels like I ran over a rock and I sence it in the right front wheel. However, it drives fine at normal and high speeds. I checked the tire to see if any oddities but nothing to see. It almost feels like a bolt is stuck in the tire and I just hit that spot.

I have yet to jack it up and wiggle the wheel or get the microscope out.

Just wondered if any of you had any thoughts of what to look for and how to proceed.

Do you hear this when turning at slow speed backing out, or straight line. I read a few threads where this was an isue when turning at slow speeds out of the garage/driveway, and it was due to cold Stock GM supercar tires. I hear it in my car when turning out of my driveway at slow speed.

I have firestone firehawks on mine. These are not the original tires as I bought this car back in June. They have some good tread left.

I can replicate the feel in my culdisack but it is at very low speed.

The feel is kinda of unerving wonder what is wrong. Is it the tires, suspension, wheel bearings? I did not notice it until about 5months after purchase.

Lets keep in touch and maybe offline if no one else is interested.

Thanks for your post

Had mine make a small clunk when turning slowly turned out to be a loose control arm bolt the one they use for adjusting the alignment.

I'll be intersted to know if anyone has some info on this too. Mine did this once when I was turning almost all the way to the wheel lock at very slow speed in a parking lot. I just thought it had to do with the front tires slipping a little from trying to turn a rear wheel drive car a little too tight. I know I've heard truck tires skid a little when someone was trying to turn them really tight. Just my thoughts... I'm still new to the car and it's my first RWD.

Oh and Happy New Year everyone!

Possibly could be the limited slip in the rear end causing it to surge. When it happens, it feels like the front tire on the opposite side of the turn is jumping, or sliding. Try going in a tight circle at low speed one way and then reversing to the other direction to see if the rear lube will eventually allow the correct slip (since the outside tire has to turn more than the inside to go the same speed). I noticed mine doing that and changed the rear end lube and added gm additive and drove a few circles and it corrected the jumping feeling. I don't know if it would have corrected without the fluid change or not, but my feeling is that it would have. It was only noticeable at low speed tight turns. It really makes it feel like the front outside tire in the turn is loose or skidding, but it's the back catching and pushing it that way. Give it a try and post what happens.

I just had my rear diff an tranny oil changed by the stealer a couple weeks ago. Wanted to do it myself but was out of time and energy. I did not change it to fix this problem and it still exists.

I do feel like the tranny shifts better though after the change. Also they found the diff has a seal problem and wanted $350 to fix. I denied the change and will look at it later.

Either way my thump is there at low speeds. I am interested in the alignment issue the previous post had. Maybe a loose bolt?

You guys, this is normal. No need to worry. It really worried me when i first got my Z but after some research I found that it was normal and mine wasn't the only one that does it. as i recall it has to do with how wide the front tires are and the aggressive camber.

Here is a previous thread about this very topic. There others too but I just did a quick search.

Yeah mine use to do that. Felt like the tire was slipping or driving over a speed bump.

I believe it has to do with the brake system and how it is sensing the turning wheel.

IF you turn with your foot on the brake at the same speed does the problem go away?

Mine seem to exist when i was turning slowly with out applying the brake.

Yeah, I have a slick garage floor, and when I back out with the wheel turned pretty sharp, the tires squeal like crazy. Feels like they are actually sliding across the polished concrete. My old Benz has 9.5 degrees caster, and it does it also. But my SUV has much less caster, and does not do it.

The diff clutches grabbing sounds like a possible candidate for the jerky sensation. My front-end clunked under this condition; it was the sway bar bushings. Replaced them, clunk went away, but it still slides the tires. Might try lubing the bar bushings just to see; takes only a few minutes.

Mine was a clunking pop when turning very slowly would only due it once and awhile had it checked and was told cam bolt on control arm had loosened they reset alignment and made sure bolts were tight has not done it since.

Any idea which bolt that is? Is it closest to the wheel or by the body?

Where it bolts to the frame the bolt has a offset washer attached to it.
but i would check both bolts were they attach to the frame.

I am thinking of having the alignment done just to put that out of my mind, but I am leary of having the dealer jack up the car. I had it jacked up twice since I owned it and the check engine light went off. I was able to reset it and suspect something in the emissions got thrown off. Maybe a loose cable.

This could probably be a whole new post but wonder how the dealer jacks the car up. I know how to do it on the frame in my garage but think the dealer does it on the body.
