Ok well this doesnt seem to be a stock box... the intake looks alot smaller than stock actually, am i being robbed of air using this?.... and what is it!?
oh and how can i tell if my TB has been ported and polished? i am told it is but... to me it looks the same..
It's a Breathless Performance Vortex Rammer intake...but it's missing a piece of the box. On the open side of the box there's supposed to be a scoop. I don't think that not having the scoop would hurt you in any way, you're just losing the 'ram air' effect the intake is supposed to have.

While the stock box may look bigger, the actual opening that lets air to the filter element is very small and restrictive. Also, the stock filter is a flat rectangle so while the Breathless filter is smaller, since it's a cylinder got similar surface area.
The box shrouds the filter from the engine compartment and the OEM plastic shroud it's mounted to was cut to allow the filter to pull air from just in front of the radiator. There is also a claimed ram air effect at speed as the lower air damn "pushes" air towards the filter, but the effectiveness of this, or any ram air intake, is debatable. Regardless, the open air element drawing cold air from outside the engine compartment is worth at least 10-15 rwhp on a stock setup.
Clean the filter with a K&N style filter cleaning kit and enjoy.
sounds good, was getting it dynoed before i cleaned the intake, (wasn't That dirty...) then i cleaned it and got another 5whp... plus it was running rich after the cleaning...
I work with carbon composites on aircraft, i was thinking about taking a stock K&N filter and making a box around it... seems like it would have pretty good surface area... any thoughts?
That thing must have been pretty filthy to pick up 5 hp from cleaning
Personally, I don't think it would be worth the effort to make your own intake. The opening on the stock air box it literally the size of a quarter. The big gains are from removing that restriction. This link shows the restriction and a cheap way (called the zip tie mod) to remove it.
The Vortex intake removes that restriction and puts the filter in cold air. Do a search and you'll see there's plenty of debate on here as to which is the best intake, but the Vortex is a solid performer. One of the more popular choices is the Vararam intake, and from the pics I've seen it looks to me like it's filter area is even smaller than the Vortex.
