Of the three aftermarket shifters this one is by far the best in my opinion.
The fore and aft movement is effortless which is just how it should be. The shifter does not add any artificial resistance in any direction unlike the Ripper and to a lesser degree the Kirban.
There is no noise that I could detect also unlike the Ripper and Kirban. I installed the rubber dust cover from the factory shifter but later found that it rode up the shift lever without my knowledge. Whenever that happened with the Kirban, I would hear the change and re-seat the dust cover. There is no need for dust cover as it turns out. The shifter is very quiet.
Quality is first rate so the time put in was not wasted. And the parts that are included are much more comprehensive than the other two shifters. You get an O ring, 4 new longer mounting bolts, a gasket (a real one not like the factory tissue paper), a tube of Lok-tite and 4 additional centering springs (two heavier inner and two lighter outer for each side) for those who prefer either a stiffer or lighter side to side movement. The lighter inner springs and heavier outer springs are installed but the directions state you can install any combination of springs that suit your preference.
One observation concerning the 2-3 shift, if you try to guide or force the shifter you will hit the 2.5 gate just like the factory shifter does (I am sure this is a function of the transmission and linkage rather than the shifter). However, I found that if you let the shifter control the direction with it's centering springs you will do much better. Not sure what affect this will have on a power shift but I'm sure I will find out in time.
This shifter has the same feel as it's predecessors even though it is a one piece lever, which is a total design departure for Hurst.
I love this shifter just like I have all of the previous Hurst shifters I have owned.
Those of you who have been waiting, wait no more. I have owned all three and Hurst is the once and still king of all shifters.

Hmmmm, guess I better update my sig!
Had to make corrections to the centering springs information.

HUHH? Artificial resistance in any direction? I just put on a ripper a few weeks ago. If you take a ripper out of the box, and just holding it in your hand, move the shifter in the up-down direction (as in 1-2, 3-4) you will see there is no "artificial resistance" - none. There are no springs effecting that direction. The only resistance any shifter adds in that direction is the reduced leverage effect of changing the fulcrom point.
As far as side-to side resistance, I'll guarantee the Hurst adds resistance side to side, as do ALL shifters. It's the springs that cause the shifter to do exactly what you described going from 2-3.
Please re-think what you said and tell me why you believe what you said because it does not add up to me. This is not to say the Hurst is not better, I don't know because I have not seen it or used it. But I don't think your statements are accurate.
Re: Got My Hurst Installed Today!!!!!! (jschindler)
I thought the same thing when I had the Ripper. All I can tell you is that once installed, the Ripper was very difficult going into gear while the Hurst is not. It glides right in. My guess is that it has something to do with the fulcrum pivot point. It's all about leverage and the Hurst has it in spades.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be anxious for someone in Houston to install one so I can see the difference. I' admit the Ripper is pretty stiff in mine, but I've seen another that is pretty easy. My tranny only has about 1000 miles on it, so that could still be a factor on mine. Also, I have the shortest **** available. I still like it, but would like to see a hurst.
team5150, that is the one thing I forgot to check. I no longer have the Ripper but seems to me it is shorter than the factory chicken leg but about the same as the Kirban. From the bottom, the pivot ball section is longer than the other two. And the ball itself is definitely larger than the Kirban's.
Re the length - I don't know the Hurst, but the Ripper is about 1/4 inch shorter than the Kirban for those that are interested (I was - held the two next to each other).

Jim,
I think you need to work on David. Then we would have all the bases covered.
Note to those that have the "early" units from me & Exit 28 Motorsports- these first ones have an O-ring in the kit, as mentioned by Cliff above. This O-ring is not needed and should be discarded. It was an artifact of an earlier version. The regular retail release should not have this with it, so this only applies to these early units being received right now. thanks,
Tx99FRC,
Let us know when you get your Hurst shifter installed. I'm sure many of us will be interested in hearing your feedback before we run out and order it. Good luck! :yesnod:
