Default stupid question about stock heads

OK, I see someone advertising several different LS1 heads for sale. 241? 893? I see that the earlier C5's had 893 heads and they have "center bolts" as opposed to the "side bolts" on the 241's. My question is, can I take the heads off a late model LS1 and put them on an early LS1? Or will the bolt holes be in the wrong place?

The heads are interchangeable. HOWEVER, the different valve covers (center bolt vs. perimeter bolt) also use a different coil pack mounting method. The perimeter bolt valve covers have each coil pack mounted directly to the valve cover. The center bolt valve covers use a bracket all the coil packs mount into and then that bracket is bolted onto the valve cover.

I'm not sure if the coil pack styles changed (could have) which would also mean your current coil packs probably would not mount the other way. I have read if you have the 853 casting ported it flows the same as the 241 heads. If it were me, I would go LS6 ported or aftermarket. Heads are expensive enough, don't do something you think you might redo later!!

The 97-98 perimeter bolt heads were casting #806.

99-00 LS1's used 853 heads. These were of the centerbolt stule.

01-04 LS1s used 241 centerbolt heads.

01-04 Z06 LS6 used 243 heads.

As stated above, as far as bolting to the engine, all are interchangeable. To convert from perimeter to centerbolt heads, you will need to get centerbolt valve covers and coil pack brackets.

I was told that a ported set of 853 heads could add 18-20 hp. No?

I have a set of ported and polished 853 castings but I dont know if I want to put them on if they are going to flow the same as the 241s castings that I already have on.
