If you are upgrading the cam, buy ported heads to go along with them. There doesn't seem to be big savings porting your own, so I would just get new ones. I used ported LS6 and they work great.

There the same heads except the ls6 heads are sodium filled valves but not much of a performance advantage. I would buy whatever heads are cheaper.

A good port job is about $500.00 and you should mill a tad which is about $100.00 so figure about $1100.00.

I would just try to find some used trickflow or AFR heads there about the same price and flow better

It will depend on the cam. If you aren't going to replace the heads, then you may want to get a cam that is spec'd more for stock heads.

keep the duration under 280 and the lift 580 or under and your overlap 14 or above and your stock heads will love it!

i would replace the springs though!

even the stock heads are very good heads

That's not completely true, a properly ported 243 will out flow the AFR 225's and make better power.

Chaase is right that would really depend on the cam and the qaulity of the heads.
