Do smooth air couplers do anything or are they just for looks?
The cost usually drains your wallet somewhat. It's mostly a cosmetic improvement over the oem accordion style.
Sometimes they can cause issues with air leaks because they are more rigid whereas the accordion allowed for some misalignment. That was my experience with a silicone coupler and "Blackwing" filter when I first got my car. Some trimming is usually necessary with the silicone couplers as well.
I found the SLP design of coupler with the bump in the middle is a little more forgiving. It didn't need any trimming, either.
Which color gives the best HP gain?
Black, Blue, Red, or Yellow
Good question. I had thought about a red one, but I'm not even going to bother until I have the money for a drag pak...don't want to melt down my M/T DR's.......
those selling it should hang by the b____s
I understand if one wants to get a different color coupler, but to gain performance??? Because of "smoother air " stream?
How about those 'turbines" that were for sale to stir-up air for better mix with gas?
every little bit is right. can't hurt, won't really help in my opinion. looks better though. again my opinion. as far as cost, that doesn't have to hurt either. my coupler came from Lowe's toilet department. 5 bucks.
Some owners of LT1 '94-96 Impala SS cars used to brag about buying their $5 FERNCO couplers from the plumbing department of their nearest home improvement store.
Then they started having erratic idle issues. Those couplers are made of elastomeric polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
If you elect to use the PVC couplings from aisle #8, be sure you check them regularly for evidence of cracks.
They were not intended to be used in the hot confines of a C5 engine compartment...
The stock accordian-style coupler is made that way for a reason. Its designed to flex and prevents the coupler from possibly separating from the TB on hard acceleration or deceleration. It is not a restriction to air flow.

ahhh ha!! they were designed for the hot confines of the C5...not the Impala SS cars.
