Hi everyone, like the title says, I am dripping some fluid that looks to have appeared a week ago, it is brown like engine oil, but it is comming from the rear driver side of the car.
Could this be automatic fluid? if so, shouldn't it be red?
Could it be differential fluid? if so, is it brown like engine oil?
What are my options here? I do not have lift access so I will have to go to a shop to get the work done (the stealership)
Well thank you all, and I will be more than happy to post pics of the fluid drops in the garage.

need a little more info...where in rear is it dripping from?
Probably the left diff seal a common problem. You have to get under it to verify as sometimes there is an overflow condition that develops and causes purge of fluid out of the top. Check around the shaft you will know.
Yes gear oil in the differential will look just like motor oil, only difference is its a little thicker (but you wouldn't be able to tell that from a few drips). It is most likely the seal where the axle mates into the differential. The seal will cost you about $25 at the dealer...its the install that will kill you. They need to drop the whole rear cradle out of the car and remove the side of the differential. I did it myself...not too hard. But I'm sure the dealer would charge you several hundred for the job.
The diet pill Alli will do that. Too much oil intake leads to a brown oily dripping from the rear. Solution is to lower the oil intake (And that is how the pill ends up working.)

Well it is from the driver rear end, I didnt see anything when I am on my knees looking underneath the car. I only notice it when I went to sweep the garage.

It is usually the driver's side rear diff cover that leaks. The fix is to pull it apart and use the sealer on the mating surfaces. My 02 was leaking with only 9,000 miles on it. Did it in my garage on the lift. Takes about 3 hours if you know what you are doing. Re-fill the rear end with GM synthetic and one 4 oz bottle of GM posi lube.
If you can't take this on yourself make sure whoever you hire has a proven track record. Too many stories of this repair having to be done over and over again. Good luck

Look at the seal where the half shaft goes into the differential.
When I bought my car everything looked good, drove it home to Seattle,WA from Palmdale,CA.......went about changing all the fluids a few days later and noticed the differential drain plug was not even finger tight! It was only screwed in about 3 threads worth! Imagine if it came undone on the way home somewhere along the 1,100mile journey. So in addition to checking what everyone else has already told you to check, I would also check the drain plug for tightness.

Had this problem on my 01. After the dealer installed a new seal it would only hold for a few months. It took about three tries before it stopped leaking for any significant length of time.
My 99 A4 was always damp in the middle in front of the axle, light leak for a lllooonnnnggg time. Kept looking, finally, tightened the tranny pan bolts, leak stopped.
