Default sounds like a knock

2003 LS1 12500miles. I hear what sounds like a knock coming from the passenger side of the motor when I first crank. The noise goes away in short time after driving I want to say it is the belt tensioner but I am not sure anybody have any hints? Oil is good pressure is good and oil temp barely reaches 200 degrees while driving.

One of the very, very rare times I will tell someone to do a search. It sounds like you have the typical LS1 "WTF is that?" I believe you will hear that it is normal and not to worry.

A "knock" is not a typical description for anything external, so you may want to redefine your terms. You may have a tapping coming from a lazy lifter. Guess you'll just have to stick your head under the hood and try to isolate the noise.....everyone will just be guessing until you do.

I would say that it is more of a tapping than a knock and it is loudest on first crank cold engine. It does not last long but is loud enough to make me wonder WTF. How long would the lazy lifter tap after the engine is warm?

Very interesting!!! I have not heard of this before. Mine does not sound as bad as a diesel but it could compare. I also have soot in one of my tail pipes.

piston slap is very normal and that link is a little exageratted in my opinion.. Its just the nature of the beast and is more annoying/embarrassing than anything else... My 99 c5 had it and it was just something you had to get used to.. I did a lot of searching to find more info on this piston slap.. Theres never been any engine failures due to this.. Many folks have 0ver 150k miles with no problems.. Do a search on this forum. Type in piston slap.. It will put you at ease... It is annoying and bothered me for a long time.. My 02 z06 does not have this issue..

This is real basic...if its tap from the top end, then its a lifter. If its a knock from the bottom end, then its either the reported piston slap or a rod bearing.
