Have a new clutch, cam, and heads. I'll probably put 100-150 miles on it of regular roads (probably 6-7 heat cycles), then 600 miles in one expressway trip. Will that help break in? Or is that bad?
My Spec clutch called for 500 mi before doing any hard launches. As for my new motor, it suggested 800-1000 mi with no revs over 3000 and no long repeated rpms. But that was for a complete new motor.
City driving with it's varying RPMs is best!! Long period of steady RPM aren't that helpful for break in. Roller cam/lifters are good from the git go. Lots of easy starts for the clutch,,then enjoy!!
if you use cruise control you get no variability in engine speed hence break in is not good your also not going to shift at all. Highways are good for breaking in new gears. clutch's just shift like a **** all the time. I row threw my gears, nothing fast or hard as I am breaking in my spec 3 clutch. I get to 40mph and am in 6th gear in about 7 seconds or so, maybe 10 with 4:10's though and I am driving **** slow shifting at 2k rpm's, just like 1/4 throttle shift 1/4 throttle shift etc. etc. You just dont want to glaze the clutch thats the major issue.
You want to vary your speed up and down some. You should also avoid steady light loads for long periods of time. You can use the cruise control, but vary the setting at least +/- 5 mph (10 mph would be better). Also, when traffic and enforcement allow, do some 75% throttle pulls in the lower gears.
I bought a new car (non-Vette) that the dealer traded from another dealer 300 interstate miles away. His driver (an older gentleman) drove one of the local dealer's cars to the other dealer and mine home. It used a quart of oil per 3000 miles the first 30,000 miles. By the time it got to 75,000 miles, it had finally stopped using oil between 7500 mile changes.
I'm sure the driver got on the interstate, put it on cruise control at 65 mph and drove it the 300 miles that way.
