Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating.
Some mornings, like this morning, I take my on-ramp at exciting speeds. I've discovered that by putting the tranny in 2 when I leave the light, with the F45 in PERF, that I can have a darn fun time negotiating the right turn onto the ramp. Then, as I approach 75, I move the shift lever to 3. It doesn't go to 3 very promptly, likewise going to 4 at 85 to 90--it kinda hangs.
So, is this normal? Does the F45 PERF have any influence on shift points like it does steering?
Re: Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating. (decay)
I don't believe the suspension has anything to do with it. The computer will shift the tranny when it believes it is the right time - moving the shift lever during acceleration only an authorization to the computer to go to the next gear - it decides when.
Re: Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating. (decay)
F45 has nothing to do with it. The only time I use the shifter manually is to hold a certain gear...especially nice if I'm racing from a roll. Or if I wanna go a little deep into redline and then shift. :smash:
Re: Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating. (decay)
They're right that the F45 switch won't alter the settings on the tranny. As for the upshift, moving the lever from 2 to 3 does nothing more than allow the tranmission to shift to third when it decides. Interestingly, according to GM and many tranmission experts, if you try to shift from 3 to 2 while going too fast for second gear, the tranmission will not downshift until it is safe to do so. (I've never tried this to verify this, so I take no responsibility if you grenade your tranny testing this!)
What I do like is the fact that the tranny won't go into first at all if you hold it in 2. This makes it much more fun around some tight turns--you can really play with some throttle steer this way! :D
Re: Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating. (Duck916)
Duck916 certainly got the first part right- moving the selector up to the next gear does not command a shift, it only authorizes the tranny to shift when it decides to. Also, under WOT the tranny will shift at exactly the right time. If you try to manually time the shifts, you can only make things worse instead of better. The one exception would be if you had engine mods and also raised the rev limiter, then manually holding a lower gear might help a little.
On the other hand, I'm not so sure about the "won't manually downshift 3 to 2 at too high a speed". Don't ask me how, but I know for sure that you can shift into Reverse at 30 mph if you are klutzy enough. It killed the engine but didn't damage the tranny.
Re: Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating. (decay)
Upshifting manually causes the tranny to "hold" the shift longer and will kill your times. Downshifting is fine, but upshifting manually is best not done. That's why they call it an automatic! :yesnod:
Re: Question about shifting the automatic myself when accelerating. (decay)
I bought a shift kit and the shift are very fast, but I have my shift points set so I don't need to manualy shift. It would be kind of cool with a tap shifter but I don't think they'll ever do that. If you want to shift them get a manual. I prefer not to shift actually, but never the less my next vette will be a standard, just to change it up a little. :)
