My ebrake will ratchet and engage, but it will not stay up. The one thing I noticed was that the button was always rattling, now the button does pretty much nothing and I suspect it is the problem but I can't even figure out what it does. I have it totally apart as the pic below shows. I round a Ebrake fix article that I thought would do the trick, but it seems his problem was that the ebrake would not ratchet as the lever was stuck open. Mine actually ratchets, but wont stay in the up position, locking the ebrake in.
I think you've got a broken spring. Does the lever/catch that engages the teeth have spring action that holds it against the teeth? Your button on the parking brake handle should have spring action, and if not, you need to repair / replace the spring.
Button does not seem to do anything now. Can lift without pushing button, and it will not stay up. If I held it up, the brake would be on though. After thouroughly searching, I think the wire that the button pushes has become detached internally. That area is welded shut, so it appears I'm going to have to get another parking brake assembly.
If anybody knows how to fix it before I replace it, please let me know.

Not much help here, but you shouldn't need to depress the button to raise(apply) the parking brake. The button is needed for releasing it. Also, a good rule of thumb with any vehicle with a hand operated e-brake is to raise the handle just ever so slightly to release the pressure then press button to release. Just my .02!
