Help! C5 Techs, need T-56 advice
I've got a noise in the transmission that's driving me crazy trying to figure it out. It's a fairly high-pitched squealing sound that starts once you're above 50 mph, but typically around 70. Once it starts it will persist down usually to about 45-50, but will occasionally continue all the way down to a complete stop. It occurs in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears (haven't tried 3rd because the engine would be getting close to redline), and, once it starts, occurs under acceleration, deceleration, neutral with the clutch out, or the clutch depressed.
I've inspected the tranny fluid (full, but slightly orangeish), tranny and torque arm mounts, shifter stops (B&M Ripper), what else is there? Since it happens in gears 4-6, I think I've eliminated the 5-6 gear shaft, and since it's not dependent on engine speed, but rather vehicle speed I'm thinking it's on the output shaft of the tranny.
Two questions: 1. Is there something in my analysis that's wrong and I need to test again, and 2. If it is in the tailshaft area, what would it be (bearing?) and do I have to remove the whole transmission to get to it?
Thanks for any advice,
Mike
The only area I can think the noise is coming from is the tapered bearing on the output shaft. It's almost like the bearing has lost it's preload slightly.
Also, could this be caused by worn tranny fluid?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Mike
Hello Mike ! make a visit your areas biggest GM dealer ship. Find shops foreman and ask him to check GM technical bulletins about your car/trans. I am pretty sure youll find your answer there. I am quite sure i recall something said about gear/bearing noise.
