Default Battery replacement question(s)

Have changed batteries in vehicles before never in a car so "computer driven" as the C5. The original battery in my "99" automatic coupe is on it's "last volts" and will probably be changed within the next couple months, if not sooner.
I know there are lots of FORUM folks that have already performed this procedure.... so I have a couple questions:
1. The battery compartment area seems very small and compact; any tips to expidite battery removal?
2. What happens with the computer system(s)? (i.e. radio/clock/CD settings, CD changer operation, seat memory etc.) Do all these settings get erased?
3. Haven't checked the Owner's Manual...does it cover this procedure?

Thanks in advance..... :D :D Take care...be safe!

It takes all of 5 minutes to swap the battery in the C5. It's actually very serviceable - just ask any C4 owner ;)

You shouldn't lose any of the memory settings. But be sure you have the Theftlock code for the radio before you disconnect the battery. Check your manual for setting/retrieving that code.

Mike, just a guess, but I would think that there are some capacitators in the circuitry to "save" the memory for awhile - certainly long enough to do a battery swap.

Even though the compartment appears tight, it is just right. The battery can easily be lifted in and out. You may want to consider picking up a ratcheting side battery terminal wrench. It helps tighten those bolts up. I bought one on impulse at Pep Boys near the batteries.

Comes right out with no problem. I put in a Red Top so I am not worried about leaks anymore and it looks good too.

Only thing I had to do was the key fob relearn process after I was done. Took 10 minutes total.

The battery location is one of the things that impressed me about the C5. The C4 was a real pain in the butt, to change the battery.

Tom/99,

I replaced mine recently with a Optima. It was very simple and straight forward. I left the grab strap on the battery and tucked it behind so that it would be there when I needed it the next time.

No "memories" were lost, not even my key fob.

Good luck,

If you are worried about losing memory settings, some of the Corvette vendors, like Mid America and Ecklers, sell a device powered by a nine volt battery that plugs in the cigarette lighter and provides enough power to preserve the memory settings after the battery is disconnected.

I used that device when I changed the "Going Fast" OE Delco for an Optima. No loss of any memory whatsoever. :D

Thanx also from my end to all the posters to this thread which gave their recommendations. THE C-FORUM ROCKS, INDEED!!!! :smash: :smash:

As a prevention measure, I ordered also an OPTIMA RED TOP (1050CA/U), by a specialized Autoparts- and Battery-Dealer here in NW-Switzerland (that's no easy going, beleive me.....!!!!).

I hope this long awaited good energie-piece would finally arrive within the next few days, as promised.

A while ago, I equipped my still actual OEM AC DELCO (old style type which is prone to leaking) with one of those Battery Quick Disconnect Switches (bought by ECKLER'S), just for "in case off". Of course I shall swap this safety device onto the RED TOP. Again many thanx for all your participation and helpful instructions, guys.

Joe.

Be careful when you remove the positive terminal on the Delco battery.. Lots of people (me included) have had acid start to run down the side of the battery when you do this!!

Don't let that acid hit the paint, or anything else!
