Default Help!!!!!!! 3.42

I want to go to 3.42 gears in my 98 C-5 A-4 with 2.73. I wont be going to the track just alot of light to light and around town, work, daily driving.. Now some say get a TC with it and some say dont ..HELP! what should i do.. what stall speed is the stock TC?? Well I be happy with just the 3.42's?? I have completed the intake and have corsa exhaust. I will be also getting B&B shorty headers and hyper tect 3 for the 3.42's. but thats about it for the mods... I want to be fast off line so that no rice burner can beat me.but want to have a good cruser as well. can anyone give some input as to what would be best..thanks jerryk :cry :cry

JerryK, The 3.42s will make a dramatic difference in the performance of your car and a Torque Converter will make it even faster. If you are never going to race your car at the track you might want to stick with the stock converter. The stock converter stalls at 1600 according to the Yank Web site, but I have heard others say it stalls at 1800. My A4 appears to stall around 1600. If you decide to go with a converter try and drive a car with the converter you are considering. A converter can feel very loose to one person but might feel just fine to someone else it is a very subjective thing.

When I upgraded to the 3.42, I kept the stock TC. Not only did I think +$700 was a bit steep for an aftermarket TC, but I also didn't want to worry about traction problems when launching. I wanted a no-brainer technique when launching from a dead stop.
I believe TC selection should be made by the individuals driving style; its more of personal choice than a definitive yes/no decision.

What exactly does the TransGo shift kit do for the car and what is the cost? Will the car still be a smooth cruiser until you hammer it? Does it cut the tires loose on the 1-2 shift?

If you want a mild converter that you will not realize you have it, go Pro Torque 2400, very quick off the line! I might move up one day to a Yank 3500, but it must have an STR of 2.3.

The TransGo Shiftkit will drastically impove your tranny management with respect to shifting, firmness, and throttle response. You can drive the car normal without any bad affects, but when you want to go nuts or WOT the car will respond with crisp, firm shifts and yes you can spin as the car shifts  It is a kit and it is pretty cheap, about $80 but the install may cost you about $100-200, not bad for the gains and kick **** performance. Probably one of the best, inexpensive mods you can do for an A4. Especially if you get a higher stalling TC, because this TC will "loosen" your tranny up and the TransGo firms everything back up.
Sounds great, Vince is giving me a ride in his car this weekend, I will see if I need this kit! :D

Thanks, that could be a plan, so long as I don't have any dead pedal.

Thanks everyone for the input, I think I might go for the Pro-torque 2400 this should be better than stock, I think I can feel the stock TC in forth gear you can kind of feel like you have a 5th gear almost like it shifts again is this the TC kicking in or something else??

If I had to do 1 of the two, it would be the TC not the gears.

It will definitely be "looser"........TransGo Shiftkit will definitely fix that and will virtually eliminate any "looseness" Mine goes in about a month from now....with the SY3500 and 3.42's :D
Are you going with the SY 3500 or ST 3500? I thought you were going for the ST 3500?

Me too, and I would go without more than a PT 2400, go for a 3000 at least man, trust me, it won't be too much!!!!

Did Hypertech ever fix the problem with their unit for recalibrating gear upgrades? When Steve Cole had his motorcycle accident and I was waiting for my recal PL for upgrade gears....I decided to buy a Hypertech for the interim. Well guess what....the Hypertech didn't shift (A4)during WOT and would hit the rev limiter. Spoke to Hypertech and they admitted there was a problem with using their Programer for gear upgrades and they were working on it. You might want to check with Hypertech before you buy the HPPIII.
