I know I have tripped over a full blown DIY cam install tutorial around here somewhere. I searched, found some short versions, but I am looking for the tons of photos, all the directions written, etc.. considering a Z06 ('02) and we are thinking of diving in head first.
lower the cradle down as far as you can on the cradle bolts - makes pulling the steering rack out 100x easier - and slides right out drivers side.
goto home depot and get the 5/16" dowels or even alum rods to hold lifters up. (unless your doing heads at same time)
if you do a search on here vettenuts made a tool to press on the pulley, M16X2mm x 300mm threaded rod (i got rod from mcmaster carr) with stack of washers and some nuts. made putting it on much easier and no worries of jacking up threads on crank. - dont use the ls1howto way on putting on the balancer.
Toss balancer in oven at 200deg for a hour or 2 and will aid in pressing back on.
usually for supercharger's keeps the hb from spinning on crank, not needed, more of if you ever decided to go FI in the furture you don't have to pull rack again. Basically you drill into the crank/balancer and put in a pin to lock them together

Stopping at cam/headers/tune. DD cam at that, nothing huge, just enough to give it some lope, make it quicker, and create happy smiles when we fire it up.
I have built motors before (one this year so far) and installed many more, just never in anything late model. I am certainly not afraid of turning a wrench. It seems the steering rack is the biggest obsticle. The cam swap it self is a breeze. I am BLIND when it comes to tuning though. My close friend just got HP tuners, so I have that available to use.
steering rack removal is over rated hehe, with tires off, i prob get the rack out in 10 mins. its not hard at all specially with the cradle lowered 3/4" or so which takes a minute to lower. i think people that struggle are doing something wrong with removal of rack.

Ha! Good to know. The more I read, the less I worry. I just hate to crack open a virgin Z06. We are considering a '02 with 50K on the clock (blk/blk). The price is right...very right. Much less than any C6 we are looking at.
So I can do a '02 Z and have room for cam/lt's/etc... or buy a C6 and have zero play money.
