How involved is it to replace the fuel pump on a 2000. On my 1994 it was very straight forward and easy. The car had two pumps replaced before I got it and it is starting to make a strange noise.
It's not that hard. The drivers side one feeds the motor. I changed mine to the 255 liter per hour. Relieve fuel presure in line and remove the three lines that hook to the tank. Remove the small screws that hold the unit to the tank. I should mention run the tank down till the check gauge light comes on for the fuel, or it will leak out. It doesn't have to be bone dry.
It,s a little tricky to get the asembly out of the tank. The pump is housed in a plastic canister, and along with the pick up screen you have to work it a bit to get it out. You will see the fuel gauge and float on the side. Unclip the float because theres not enough room to get it all out at one time.
Now,s where they got you. The pump is in the canister and you have to buy the whole assembly. I recomend replacing the fuel gauge at same time it's fairly cheep.
Lingenfelter offers a 255 liter per hr. pump at $300. You send them the canister and they pull it apart and install the new pump and a new screen.
Installation is reverse of removal. IMPORTANT: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS THAT HOLD THE PUMP IN THE TANK. If you do it will leak. Tighten screws to 26.5 inch pounds. Put a little silicone on the head of the screews to keep them from backing off.
