Default Differential output shaft is loose

Video added:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acLGYZV9jrk

I am in the process of replacing the reverse gear on my 99 6sp Vette. When I pulled the CV joint out of the diff I noticed that the diff output shaft is loose and instead of being centered on the opening it sags down about a half inch. I can easily wiggle it around in all directions. Passenger side is worse than drivers side.

The car drove fine (aside from the reverse issue). The fluid that drained out from the diff was grey in color. So what is the damage? Is it rebuildable?

I suggest an email to RPM Transmissions. I believe they can best answer this.

I had the same thing on my 98. I would like to find out what it would take to rebuild it as a extra.

I talked to RPM. As always, great advise, great service.

Their response: "The shaft is fine. The clutches are worn out and the preload springs are probably broken. "

So I guess I have lost limited slip...?

Time to find a replacement diff.

SOme good deals out there on used ones, and then you can sell the one you have as a core to RPM or DTE to recoup a few bucks.
