Default A4 Tranny slipping?

Ive searched and searched and all I come up with is get it rebuilt.

Tranny has 43k miles on it. It started slipping while cruising on the highway with absolutely no prior signs of trouble.

I pulled over a mile later and trailered it home, was hoping something in the tune messed up. I returned it to stock (diablo predator) and still does it, reflashed the custom tune it and still does it.

Basically it doesnt want to shift out of 2nd and into 3rd. It will but takes a little while, then to accelerate you have to kick it down a gear or it just free revs.

I checked the fluid and its full...actually leaked a half a quart out when I pulled the fill plug (tried in park and neutral and it still was spilling out). The fluid is a nice red, doesnt smell or look burnt and no signs of metal shavings.

Any ideas? Torque convertor? A solenoid/valve sticking?

If you're tired of hearing "time for a rebuild" then I would try replacing the shift solenoids. Otherwise you are looking at a rebuild.

I have had shift solenoids fail w/o throwing a SES light so give that a shot.

I have only bought them from the Chevy dealer, although I'm sure they are available at any parts house.

Same thing happened to me twice. Burned the first tranny up, then did it again. The second time I got it rebuilt and had problems after that with the solenoids. No problems now though.

Anyone have instructions on replacing these solenoids? Approximate cost of parts? Thanks!

Did you check the fluid with the tranny warm and the car running? It should not have been that over-filled. You are probably low by 1/2 quart now if the check was not done correctly.

"The engine must be running when the transmission fluid fill plug is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fill plug. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. Do not turn the engine off with the fill plug removed, as you can be injured by hot transmission fluid being expelled out of the oil fill opening."

Here is the whole procedure from RPM Transmissions.

Yep tranny was fully warm then ran through gears, put in park and pulled plug while car was running. Also tried neutral and it was still pouring out. It was still pouring out when I put the plug back in, could it be overfull?

Whenever I check mine it doesn't pour out of the hole like that. I checked it once after a cooler install and it took about 8 - 10 ounces to top it off. I kept adding fluid until it started to drain back out of the hole then stopped. Let it drain a minute or so and then put the plug back in.

Sounds like yours was over filled at some point by someone but I don't know what kind of damage an over fill would cause.

Maybe some on the forum could chime in.

Overfill can cause trouble but if you want to really check the condition drop the pan and look for parts/debris if you find none its probably the solenoids but I'll bet you find some.

Drained excess fluid, still same problem, no 3rd gear. Pulled the pan, no debris or parts.

Ideas? Solenoids?
