Default 2001 zo6 heads?

Is there any differences between the 2001 z06 heads and the 2002 and up ones? I may be buying a set off of a friend. just want some opinions and some input. these will be going on a 1998 coupe with a new ls6 intak/tb/maf setup.

Heads? I don't think any difference. Valves? Yes, the 2002 and later had sodium filled valves. 2002 and later also have higher lift and longer duration camshaft. 2002 and later have better catelitic convertor, and no pre cats, and no MAF screen.

I believe the valvesprings are different as well. From what I understand, GM released the 2001 Z06 with lowerlift/shorter duration cams because they were attempting to resolve valve float issues that occurred from the 2002 spec cam...

Valves are different 02-04 Z has sodium filled (i even heard only intake valves are sodium filled and exhaust V are steel). Also 01 Z heads have green color V springs and support upto .540 lift compared to 02-04 which i believe support upto .571 lift.

There's also v shape symbol on later Z heads which flows little more CFM too, where exactly is that V shape on heads i dont know, which results in 5 HP more.

All 243 casting heads have the v shape and most of the LS1's 241 castings do also.

The V shape is just below each spark plug hole created by the semi-permanent mold. They are called "chill marks" The earlier 853 heads were cast using sand... which isn't as smooth in the ports, hence the slight improvement by the semi-permant mold.

You can see the trianglular chill marks just below the spark plug hole
