I have read almost all of the info on the threades and links for the "Service Column Lock" issue and I need some more information.
My car is a 2000 6-spd that has had 04006 and 01044 . So, my car has the white wire in the bundle leading to the BCM and has had the re-flash . I also still had the locking ring.
I got the "message" after the car had sat for about a month without starting .The column was locked and didn't move. I shut it off charged the battery and tried again the next day. This time the column lock retracted and after I reset the DIC I went for a short drive of about ten miles.
When I returned from the drive I shut off the car and did not hear the lock engage. I tried to start the car and heard no lock motor. I started the car and had the SCL message again PLUS the fuel shut-off.
Since then I have removed the steering wheel and confirmed that the motor and switch within the lock assy are good. I can cycle the motor and see the switch change states with a meter and a small battery.
I have checked and cleaned all of the grounds on the front of the car.
The BCM has been reset and the lock unlock switch has been used to send the signal at the right time.
All the while there is still no lock motor movement during key insertion. When the motor supply voltage is checked during key insertion it is 10.3vdc. After a few seconds it jumps to 12.4 vdc.
Because of the lower voltage I believe that I am seeing a false voltage of a "floating" voltage with no current.
What I really could use is the relay diagram and the schematic for the control of the relay. Also, could the BCM be shutting off the supply for the relay as an extra safety? Is this the reason that we all have to go to GM if we get stuck here?
Is there any way to just send the BCM module to the dealer for a reset and removal of the fuel cutoff?
This whole steering lock issue is foolish and overcomplicated. GM you screwed this one up.
Even with the lower voltage that will not run the lock motor, are you saying that installing a CLB will fix the problem and clear the error?
I had guessed (not sure yet) that once this error was locked into the computer, that you had to have GM reset the PCM and BCM. If you didn't have GM reset it you were stuck and couldn't get the code to go away. Even if you had a shop program out the fuel shutoff you still have a SCL message on the DIC.
Is there a way to reset the car and have it re-check the condition from a clean slate? I ask this because I want to avoid buying a CLB, sticking it in and just having the same condition persist because the car is not re-checking the conditions and has "made up it's mind" so to speak.
Is the lower voltage a result of the supply being shut off or the relay going bad?
I looked for the K harness relay and did not see it mounted on the inside of the knee bolster mounting hoop that would be just above the left knee. If I have the white wire in the four wire bundle that is at the connection point between the column lock assy and the main harness four pin connector that is attached to the crossmember under the dash, do I have a K harness or some weird in-between.
After reviewing the recall docs it looked like my car only got the re-flash.
Here's the thing I don't understand-after reading all the posts on this subject why you wouldn't just order a $50 CLB. You probably spent more time reading and pondering it than it would have taken to earn the money and install it.

Because I like to both understand and do the work myself. It's part of the fun.

I see to many of these posts and telling people to stay the hell away from the dealer gets tiresome.
