What does it mean if I get the "Service Column Lock" every time I start or shut off my car?
My Column is not locked after starting and I am aware of the Column Lock Bypass. My A4 car came off the line in April, 2000. Do I even need to worry about he Column Lock Problem?
It would seem to be that the column lock is not engaging. Maybe a relay or fuse. I can't find a fuse in either box designated for the Column Lock.
It really wouldn't bother me if it was not working as long as it remains disengaged. I just want to make sure I don't get stranded because it is ENGAGED and won't DISENGAGE. The message is a bit annoying also.
I'm sure you've heard abouth this, right? When I received this message last week, I took it to the dealer the next day. Don't want to get stranded? Then procrastinate no more and get it to the dealer so they'll tak care of it, End of Story.
Your column is stuck in the unlocked position, the lessor of two evils...The body computor is detecting this, resulting in the message on the DIC...Have the dealer perform the recall which will disable the column lock on the A4...Your VIN# may not be included in the recall, but recently a service bulletin was released to include all 97-2000 C-5's for the repair...
There is the potential that the computor will shut the fuel off leaving you stranded because the column lock is linked in with the security system so have it addressed...
