It did for me. Testing via G tech and at the dragstrip showed a 15 to 20 HP difference between 170 and 205 degree coolant temps. Of course, you're gonna hear LOTS of opinions on this one, all different. My testing backs up what I've heard from most of the major tuners, who go for lower coolant temps for power. And you need to keep the temps lower by lowering the temps at which the fans turn on.
Do you have to adjust the fans to do this mod?
I had MTI program my computer but I never received a list of changes that they made nor can I get any info out of them regarding the changes. :( :(
You do want to lower your on/off fan temps to get all the benefits of a lower temp stat. Otherwise you just have a stat that opens sooner after starting the car. You can do that through programming or using one of several adjustable fan controller kits out there, some high dollar, some not.
And if I picked up ~20HP with my 160, I sure didn't notice it
I ran a 180 thermo on my LS1. I had Steve Cole do some rework on the fan "turn on" temps. Didn't notice any performance gain hp/tq wise, but it really helped the car run nicely on those very hot Phoenix days with A/C on!
I'd be surprised if you DID "notice it". 15 to 20 HP change isn't enough that you'll readily feel it SOTP. Think about it, that's just enough for your car to accelerate up to a little over 100mph, in two tenths of a second faster. That's WAY less than 2% change. How could you notice it. The point is that through TESTING, as rigorous as I could make it to eliminate other variables, THAT'S the results I saw. Besides the G-Tech results, I did two runs at the strip, back to back, only difference the coolant temp, with the same 60' times (within .05 seconds), my time was 2 tenths faster, and my trap speed was 1.5 MPH faster when starting at 170 degrees Vs. 205.
The facts are that the LS1 likes slightly lower temps for power, to keep it out of detonation, and for denser intake air. The higher temps from the factory are for emissions, pure and simple.
Perhaps I should have stated that more clearly. I have not noticed a ~20 HP gain in either dyno results or track times as a result of changing the stat. I like low temp stats. I just don't think (based on measurements other than SOTP) I was losing 20HP to KR that came back with lower ECT.
On the other hand, if you're hitting the line at teh dragstrip with an ECT of 235F and have found a way to bring that down to say 180-190F, you may definitely be faster. The stat itself has very little to do with that though, the fans have a much lager impact.
I did the Tstat/ Fan mod kit for about $180, the coll thing is that it all one set up, the tstat housing has a plug that sends info to the fans. All in all, I run about 20 degrees cooler than my friend's Z06 in the summer minths. That was, until he did the mod too.
Cooler operating temp. will encourage carbon builup, of which the LS1 is very susceptible to , due to its compression ratio.May require more decarbs than with the stock thermostat. JCR
