Default CLB Question

Okay, I read through a lot of CLB threads, and I still have a question, I have a '99 FRC (6 Speed) with 145,000 miles on it, the recall got done back in '06 where the lock mechanism was removed, the other day I replaced the water pump, and when I started it up for a leak check, I got the "pull key, wait 10 seconds" deal, after I pulled the key and re started, I got something like "service column lock" or something like that, fuel shutting off, etc. Since I felt this was recall related, I called the dealership and had it towed to them. They called me this morning to tell me that the harness was shorted because the lock motor was burned up, bottom line, it's a $775.00 repair. Would a CLB module get around this?

Yes. I just did this on my stepdads vette. He had the recall done - both of them. I pulled the gm K harness they installed out and put in my clb so he could drive his car - then I ordered another one for mine.

How do you pull the harness out?

I have had my '97 in the dealership three times for the clb at no cost to me. I think you got the short end of the stick.

Yeah, I ain't gonna sit still for it, but the answer I got is the recall warranty was 12 months/12,000 miles, I'm way over that, but this is still a recall issue in my eyes.

My first time in the shop for the clb was when the car was 8 or 9 yrs old and well over 12,000 miles. The next two times were same year or next. It is still a safety/recall issue and should be paid by GM.

Whatever you do, don't let the dealer tell you they need to replace the column lock actuator. (sounds like that is what they are trying to do)
You do not need a working actuator to get the car to run.
The lockplate should have been removed so the column cannot lock, so all you need is a bypass relay to simulate the actuator and keep the BCM from cutting the fuel off.
In fact, aftermarket bypass kits leave the actuator disconnected.

I would tell the dealer to remove the lockplate (if not already done), and install the Harness K or an aftermarket CLB relay. They both perform the same function.

The harness i removed was under the steering column - the same place as where the clb goes. I unplugged it - plugged in the cigarette adapter (included with the clb) to release the column lock - unplugged the cigarette adapter and plugged in the clb module. If I can find my directions - I can scan them and send them to you. pm me or send me an email if your interested. I'm sure there is a picture of the area where the clb goes.

You dont need the lock motor. as long as you have a good k-harness or clb, plug it in and drive. dont let them soak you for a new lock motor......

....You replace the water pump yourself and you have been around this forum for awhile but you have your car towed to the dealership for a column lock problem? I just don't understand!

Yeah I know, messed up ain't it? My work schedule just won't allow me to mess with this anymore, and the electronics kicks my butt a lot more than the mechanical stuff. The water pump was another fiasco, (2009 LS3 pump) topic for another thread.....
